Updated September 2026: Charles Hoskinson is best known as a co-founder of Ethereum and the founder of Cardano developer Input Output. This article replaces the old fan-style “King of Rats” framing with a factual overview of his role in the ecosystem.
Ethereum to Input Output
Hoskinson was one of Ethereum’s early co-founders. After leaving the project, he co-founded Input Output with Jeremy Wood in 2015. Input Output became the principal engineering organization behind Cardano’s early development.
His Role in Cardano
Hoskinson has been one of Cardano’s most visible founders and advocates, but Cardano is not a company owned by one person. Its network, stake pools, governance participants, development organizations and community are separate actors.
Midnight and Other Work
Input Output also incubated Midnight, a privacy-focused partner-chain ecosystem now operating its own mainnet. Hoskinson frequently discusses Cardano, Midnight, decentralized governance and blockchain research publicly.
Why the Distinction Matters
A founder’s public statements are not automatically protocol decisions. For current Cardano facts, check network documentation, governance actions and released software rather than treating any personality as the network itself.
