Updated September 2026: Midnight mainnet is live, but permissionless block production and NIGHT block rewards are not live yet. The current federated block producers receive no block rewards. This guide explains the planned role of Cardano Stake Pool Operators (SPOs) without ranking operators or promising rewards that do not yet exist.
What Is a Midnight Block Producer?
Midnight block producers validate transactions and produce blocks for the Midnight network. On Midnight’s public testnet, Cardano SPOs have already been able to opt into Midnight block production by running the required Midnight infrastructure and registering as committee candidates.
Can Cardano SPOs Produce Midnight Blocks Today?
Not permissionlessly on mainnet yet. Midnight launched with a trusted/federated validator model as a bootstrapping phase toward decentralization. Its official FAQ says the current federated operators receive no block rewards.
Why Cardano SPOs Matter
Midnight’s published tokenomics describes Cardano SPOs as part of its future block-production model. NIGHT is intended to be distributed from a protocol-managed reserve to incentivize block production once that reward system is active.
This creates a technical connection between Cardano’s existing operator ecosystem and Midnight, but it does not mean that every Cardano pool is currently a Midnight block producer or that ADA delegators automatically receive NIGHT.
Do Midnight Block Producers Earn NIGHT?
Not in the current federated mainnet phase. NIGHT block-production rewards are planned for a later, more permissionless stage. Any article claiming that a particular pool currently “prints NIGHT” from mainnet block production is premature.
Does Delegating ADA Earn NIGHT?
There is currently no automatic “delegate ADA → receive NIGHT” mechanism. ADA delegation follows Cardano’s staking rules. NIGHT and DUST follow Midnight’s tokenomics.
ZEIT intends to participate in permissionless Midnight block production when it becomes available. If the final mechanics make additional NIGHT incentives shareable with Cardano delegators, ZEIT intends to use that opportunity for its delegators. That remains a plan rather than a guaranteed reward.

What About NIGHT and DUST?
NIGHT is Midnight’s native token and is used to generate DUST. DUST is a shielded, non-transferable resource used for Midnight transaction fees. DUST is not generated by delegating ADA.

How to Evaluate a Future Midnight Block Producer
- Technical readiness: evidence that the operator can run and monitor the required infrastructure.
- Cardano SPO experience: Midnight’s testnet model builds directly on Cardano SPO operation.
- Transparency: clear communication about what is live versus planned.
- Reliability: verifiable operational history rather than reward claims.
- Reward terms: wait for actual mainnet mechanics before assuming how NIGHT will reach operators or delegators.
Current Status
- Midnight mainnet: Live
- Federated block production: Live
- Federated block rewards: None
- Cardano SPO block production on public testnet: Demonstrated
- Permissionless SPO mainnet participation: Not live yet
- NIGHT block-production rewards: Planned, not live yet
ZEIT and Midnight
ZEIT is an independent Cardano Single Pool and intends to extend its infrastructure into Midnight when permissionless SPO participation becomes available. Until then, the useful thing for delegators is to verify ZEIT’s current Cardano parameters rather than rely on speculative NIGHT reward estimates.
