Updated September 2026: NightSwap is a real project building a privacy-preserving DEX for Midnight, but the key status detail matters: its testnet is live; this article should not imply that a production mainnet DEX is already operating.
What Is NightSwap?
NightSwap describes itself as a privacy-preserving decentralized exchange built for Midnight. Its goal is to use Midnight’s zero-knowledge architecture to support trading where sensitive transaction information does not have to be exposed like it is on a conventional fully transparent ledger.
Is NightSwap Live?
NightSwap’s testnet is live. The project’s current website invites users to launch the testnet. Its published roadmap places a V1 mainnet release after the basic testnet milestone, followed by further AMM and shielded-trading milestones.
What Is It Testing?
The roadmap starts with basic zero-knowledge swap functionality and a minimal interface, then progresses toward a mainnet release, AMM contracts, shielded swap functionality, liquidity pools and more advanced DeFi features.
Why Midnight?
Midnight is a specialized Layer 1 partner chain with zero-knowledge state management and programmable privacy. Applications can combine public and private state rather than forcing every piece of transaction data into a permanently public model.
Is Midnight Just a Cardano Sidechain?
Midnight’s current documentation describes it more precisely as a partner chain and specialized Layer 1 operating alongside Cardano. It has its own ledger architecture while maintaining important technical and economic connections to Cardano.
What About Privacy?
“Private DEX” does not mean that everything is automatically invisible. The exact privacy properties depend on the application design, smart contracts and what information users choose or need to disclose. NightSwap’s goal is privacy-preserving DeFi using Midnight’s zero-knowledge capabilities.
