Updated September 2026: NIGHT is live. It is the unshielded native and governance token of Midnight. Its most important live utility is generating DUST, the shielded, non-transferable resource used to pay Midnight transaction fees. Future utility includes network incentives and decentralized governance.
WTF Is NIGHT?
NIGHT is Midnight’s capital and utility asset. Unlike a privacy coin, NIGHT itself is public and transparent. Midnight separates the asset you hold from the resource you spend to use the network: NIGHT generates DUST; DUST pays transaction fees.
NIGHT vs DUST
- NIGHT: transferable, unshielded native/governance token.
- DUST: shielded, non-transferable renewable network resource.
- NIGHT is not spent when you use Midnight.
- Registered NIGHT generates DUST over time; DUST is consumed by transactions and regenerates while the backing NIGHT remains registered.

What Is NIGHT Used For?
Today: NIGHT generates DUST and serves as Midnight’s native capital asset. Planned/future: NIGHT is designed for governance, ecosystem incentives and block-production rewards as Midnight decentralizes.
Can You Stake NIGHT?
Not currently. Midnight’s official FAQ says there is no NIGHT staking mechanism at mainnet launch. Future staking functionality would require a later governance process. Articles describing NIGHT staking as a live feature are outdated.
Can Cardano SPOs Earn NIGHT?
Not in the current federated mainnet phase. Midnight’s published tokenomics plans to distribute NIGHT from a protocol-managed reserve to future block producers and explicitly discusses a role for Cardano Stake Pool Operators. Current federated block producers receive no block rewards.
ZEITGEIST intends to participate when permissionless SPO block production becomes available. If the final mechanics allow additional NIGHT incentives to be shared with Cardano delegators, ZEIT intends to use that opportunity for its delegators. How Much NIGHT Exists?
Midnight documents a fixed total supply of 24 billion NIGHT. NIGHT was distributed through the multi-phase Glacier Drop program and related distribution phases. Historical claim mechanics should not be confused with current network utility.
Why the Two-Part Model Matters
Traditional blockchains often use the same volatile asset both as capital and as transaction fuel. Midnight separates those roles. This makes possible features such as DUST sponsorship, where a developer can generate DUST and cover transaction costs for users.
